The University of Pennsylvania commissioned a feasibility
study to examine reuse and adaptation of a 1920's Art Deco building
on its campus. In addition they wanted to compare the costs of building
a new building of equivalent square footage on the same site.
The comprehensive study covered the historic importance
of the building, suggestions for reuse, an outline specification,
and cost estimates for both scenarios.
The report concluded that a new equivalent building
would be considerably more expensive even if historical renovations
and restorations were included in the comparison. The existing building
with its limestone and marble facade could not be built today for
a reasonable cost.
The report also recommended restoring the banking floor
to its original design with a double height space and mezzanine to
create another dramatic gathering space for students. The space could
be a club, theater, restaurant, or retail space to compliment the
commercial space already on Walnut Street.
